WINTER WONDERLAND

We went to Canada for the weekend with another Royal Oak family. They have two daughters who are the same ages as our boys. The interaction between the kids was fun to watch. Their girls were really great. So nice and polite and talkative! (Our boys are sooooooo shy.)

Gary is a lawyer and former professional photographer. He took a bunch of pictures of Ball's Bridge for us. (I would like to put together a calendar for next year...so he got some winter shots.) It was quite an experience. We got up at 6am and went down to the bridge in total darkness to set up a shot (he artificially lit up the bridge) and he took pictures as the sun rose. I can't wait to see the finished pix.

Upon re-entering the states, we were filled with grief to think that starting in June, everyone (including kids) will be required to have passports. (We even got our passports stamped this time entering Canada--a first!) It bummed us out because the kids have brought so many friends to Canada through the years and now it won't be quite so simple. I doubt anyone that doesn't have a passport is going to run out and get one. So some kids won't be able to come any more. We keep a list and there are over 30 friends that have come up with us for the weekend. We decided to have one last blowout party on Memorial Day weekend.

SANTA BABY

We went to my Aunt Susan's house on Christmas Eve. It's our tradition. I have 24 cousins on my mom's side of the family so it's a big group and the food is always GREAT. We enjoy seeing everyone, especially our cousins who come in from Oklahoma, as it's the only time of the year we see them.

My cousin Jenny has a nine month old baby and he is so cute. I was holding 'lil Lucas and talking to him, and Willie came up to me and whispered, "Mom you are talking to him like he's a dog." Then I realized, it's the other way around! I talk to our dog like he's a baby. Can you blame me? Just look at our little beagle.

We bought the Ozzie a Santa suit too. During the holidays, walking the dogs in downtown Royal Oak, in their little red outfits, and seeing all the smiles they generated was one of our favorite pastimes.

PARTY ANIMALS

While we were out bowling with cousins Rem and Logan, Barney and Ozzie did a little partying of their own--getting into Willie's Christmas stocking. When we got home we found M&M wrappers and chocolate foil EVERYWHERE! Barney was bouncing off the walls on a sugar high, until he threw up and then both dogs collasped. I slept on the couch with them. They both looked miserable. Poor things!

COMPARE PRICES

I ran across this photo that I sent in to be considered for a book cover. Actually, I am pretty flattered that my publisher used a picture of me for the cover, since I am not really famous. I am sort of pretend famous or a "legend in my own mind."
Also I ran across this website that compares book prices (including shipping). It's pretty cool.
None of the stores charge your credit card until it ships.

I've been playing around with the look of the RockStarMommy.info.
Check it out. It looks slightly different. It's still a work in progress.

CRAZED PARENT

I just found this review on the CRAZED PARENT blog. Cool!

Good reads: I also just finished reading the galley proof of Rock Star Mommy: My Life as A Rocker Mom by Judy Davids, the lead guitarist of the mom rock group The Mydols. A bunch of moms with no instrument experience whatsoever form a band and kick some serious boo-tay in Detroit. I can't say more about the book because it's not out yet, but I will admit that it got me very fired up about attending Ladies Rock Camp next spring. I'm ready to shred. And no, you can't have the galley proof.

We had a wonderful Christmas. We went to so many parties. It was great to see so many friends over the past week, but I am exhausted! As for Christmas day, we spent the morning with my parents playing Rock Band. It was a little weird to hear my mom sing Nirvana's "In Bloom". Later we spent the day with the Davids. It was fun to see Karl and Jenny. (Jenny took one of my galleys with her to read on the plane.) My best present? It was my father-in-law telling me how much he loves my book! AWWWWWW! (My mother-in-law is reading it too.)

FUN IN THE D

John and I went to a Lions' football game today. One of John's clients gave him these amazing seats on the 40 yard line, 7 rows behind the team. Barry Sanders was there and the Lions won. We got lucky.
Tonight we've been invited to Joel Martin's 54 Sound party in Ferndale. John is hoping to meet Eminem. I am just hoping we don't feel out of place--like dorks.

Scroll down to the end.

I LOVE Target!!!

Charity Gift Wrappers

The whole Davids family wrapped books last night at Barnes and Noble for the Royal Oak High Lacrosse team. We had the honor of having a couple of varsity players hang out with us. (They didn't wrap...as one the the boys said "No one wants to have their gifts wrapped by a kid." They may be right but my boys wrapped anyway.)

It was great how super nice everyone was to us. People that didn't even have us wrap, still gave us their change. And people were so patient while Dylan and Willie took their time gift wrapping . It was great to hear people comment on what nice boys they were.

The whole evening put me in a great holiday mood.

GALLEYS ARRIVE!

I got my galleys in the mail this week. It looks like a real book--more or less--just the cover is different. The real cover is still being modified, so the galleys are bound in red with the title info, pages (208), ISBN number, publishing date etc.

The design is really cute. I used to work for a book compositor in my 20s so I have a real appreciation for the production.

MYDOLS TRADING CARDS

HOT MOMS CLUB

More praise for Rock Star Mommy!

I just got an endorsement from Jessica Denay. She writes the "Hot Moms" series and is the founder of the Hot Moms Club and magazine. I am going to be on the COVER of the January issue! There will also be an article by me too. Check out the website: http://www.hotmomsclub.com/.

MORE BLURBS

I got two more blurbs for my book. One is from Joel Martin who is one of Detroit's greatest music producers and the genius who discovered Eminem. He wrote:

"There's nothing sexier then a Mom who dares to bring out her inner Rock Star... Judy Davids Rocks! "

And Karen Leigh Hopkins who wrote and produced such movies as "Because I Said So" and "Step Mom" wrote this:

"It's pretty rare to read something that is both inspired, original, and true. With a point of view that is hilarious and how about this - a unique voice outta the midwest that transcends even rock and roll. Davids book is hip, but compassionate, and relateable in a way that never pushes. You can't help but fall in love with her spirit, her courage, and her profound motherhood. She's a real woman with a real story to tell and a message that it's never to late to follow your dreams."

I feel honored.

I'M TOO SEXY

I bet the title above caught your attention! Sorry, this blog is not as tantalizing as you might have hoped for.

I just heard from my agent. Another author is writing a blurb for my book. This time it's Betty Londergan who wrote "I'm too Sexy for my Volvo: A Mom's Guide to Staying Fabulous!"

It's really cool to get endorsements from authors, because they should know if my book is good or not. I mean my mom likes it, but then SHE'S MY MOM for heaven's sake.

THIS DOESN'T SUCK

I have been busy the past week going over my proofs for Rock Star Mommy and securing blurbs for the jacket. I sent the manuscript corrections to the production editor in New York this morning. It's kind of scary. I can make no more corrections.

On the blurb front, so many people have been kind enough to supply witty comments including RockinMoms.com, Go Girls, Mamapalooza, and Momz Hot Rock. Now author Joanne Kimes, who wrote Pregnancy Sucks, Breastfeeding Sucks, Bedtime Sucks, Potty Training Sucks and more, has added her insight! She has a great blog called Sucks in the City. Check it out.

TAKE OUT THE TRASH

Now that Reflections is winding down, I'm on to a new and exciting projects at the middle school--RECYCLING! That's right our school recycles. My task is to make some eye-popping posters to get the kids' attention and to design a t-shirt. Ah! T-shirts! I love t-shirts. So I think I got a pretty good concept--better stop blogging and start designing!

LADIES ROCK CAMP

I was going over my proofs today with my editor, when she told me she got a phone call from this women who does Ladies Rock Camps. It sounded pretty cool so I called one up. (They happen all over the country.) I asked if I might be able to particpate some how--like give a workshop on webdesign or making a presskit--the kind of stuff I am pretty good at. Lord knows they don't want me to to give guitar lessons. The person I spoke to sounded really interested. Her camp is in Brooklyn.

THANKS PAT!!

The Mydols drummer, Pat McGough, just went through the manuscript of Rock Star Mommy. Pat is a voracious reader and her opinion meant a lot to me. I have been worrying for months if the other girls in my band would like my book. One of my biggest concerns was that I portrayed their feelings inaccurately. When writing the book I tried to rely strictly on email, and not on memory, so when I quoted them I was using their words and not my own. I also tried to avoid writing anything personal as their lives belong to them! And (this was the hardest thing to do) I tried not to steal any of their good stories! Kara's, our lead singer, kids say the FUNNIEST things but I saved them for her to tell...she could fill a book! (At one point I did use something her daughter said but it got cut.)

Anyhow, I just got my proofs back from Pat and she did a great job catching things--like I had our lead singer's age wrong! She also reminded me of a couple of things that I forgot. I am so grateful to her. Next one to read it is my mom and then I give it to Kara. (Paige read one chapter over the summer, but she is in Seattle now.)

LOS ANGELES

I spent a lot of time on the phone today talking to folks in Los Angeles. I am planning a trip there in January and I want to make the most of it. I am looking forward to meeting a screenwriter who is interested in my book. And meeting my agent face to face...plus a whole lot more.

PROOFS ARRIVED TODAY

The FedEx man dropped the proofs for Rock Star Mommy on my porch today . It's the first chance I have had to "see" what the design looks like for the inside of the book. It's very cute. Lots of stars, guitars, drums etc.
It's also my last chance to correct any mistakes. I can't add or rewrite anything at this point but I can change spellings of names or dates...factual inaccuracies or typos. I have to send the whole thing back to New York by December 5.
I just read the first 3 chapters and I am kind of amazed that I did it. I really wrote a book. Unbelievable.

PUMPKIN PIE

Yesterday we made 40 pumpkin pies for St. Peter's Soup Kitchen in Detroit. "We" being 30 or so 6th through 8th graders at St. Mary. The kids were all so enthusiastic but I am worried in all the disorganization that some pies have no sugar and others have 3 cups of sugar! They all "looked" great though. The kids who made the pastry did a particularly awesome job. One of the girls taught me how to make a beautiful pinched border. I am sure the "eaters" of our pies will enjoy the effort and love that went into them.

DAISY ROCK CATALOG

Hey that's me in the Daisy Rock catalog! No not on the cover, (I wish!) but in the gallery of girls that rock. I'm kind of blown away to be in such great company.

I am currently talking with Tish (the Prez of Daisy Rock) about possibly going to Anaheim in January for the NAMM Show. As their website (www.namm.org) states:

The NAMM Show is the place to be for anyone lucky enough to belong to this industry. From accordions to zithers, attendees can find anything and everything musical there. Miles of aisles feature the newest, state-of-the-art music products, as well established classics and hot, up-and-coming innovations—all under one roof! In addition, attendees can choose from dozens upon dozens of free industry-focused training sessions, all designed to help Members grow their business. The NAMM Show is always an unforgettable event, with more than 80,000 registrants packing the aisles of the Anaheim Convention Center to check out the latest gear. The show is a star studded event with endorsing musicians such as Carlos Santana, Sheila E, Stevie Wonder, Dweezil Zappa, Keanu Reeves and Korn, adding to the spectacle as they pose for pictures and talk shop with show attendees. From CBS to CNN and E! Entertainment Television, journalists from throughout the world come to cover the new instruments unveiled.

I want to prove to the world that ANYONE can play a guitar--even a monkey. You might not play well, but it sure is a heck of a lot of fun to play LOUD. There may be only one Bonnie Raitt but there are a gagillion people (and monkeys) like me and it is NEVER too late to learn and own a cute guitar!

ROYAL OAK PUBLIC LIBRARY

There's no place like home!

Royal Oak is such a wonderful place to live. The Mayor comes to Mydols concerts, the Superintendent of Schools does a cable TV show with us. The Royal Oak Music Theatre hosts Mamapalooza. And now the library is helping me promote my book Rock Star Mommy by allowing me to speak and do a book signing. I feel blessed to call Royal Oak my home town.

I'll be speaking Tuesday, May 6 from 7-9 PM.

Please visit www.ropl.org or www.booktour.com for more information.

JEE YEON

Here's Jee Yeon and a friend preparing sandwiches. She's doing really well. She just won a poetry contest and played "a woman who has a husband carries on an independence movement in defiance of Japanese coercion" in a History program at school to rave reviews. Students proclaimed "She's a natural!"

We miss her!

Dylan's first day of driver's training went well. He and buddy Alec may be on the road as early as this Saturday. Yikes! He seemed to enjoy his first day of class and is looking forward to getting behind the wheel.

I WAS ASSIGNED MY PUBLICIST TODAY

I couldn't help myself. I put up my Christmas lights and tree today. I've been wanting to do it ever since I took down my Halloween lights. The look to the left is what I am going for. I have a month and a half to do it.

I was also assigned my publicist today from Kensington Books. I am really looking forward to chatting with her soon!

DRIVER'S TRAINING STARTS TODAY

I'M NOT CLOWNING AROUND

I made this Halloween costume 13 years ago for the grandchild of a co-worker. Yesterday, Patti brought in this photo. This is the 13th child to wear this clown suit in as many years. AND she has an order for it for next year. Another co-worker said the "Barney" costume I made his son has been worn by various kids too.

When my boys were little I hand-made costumes for them every year--they were all kinds of animals, Disney characters, cowboys, Pokemon etc. I am thinking about setting up my own little Halloween U.S.A. next October and distributing the costumes to my co-workers and their children, grandchildren and friends to enjoy in years to come.

WRITING HOME

I'm really into memoirs lately and this is a really good one--Writing Home by my fellow Royal Oakey, Cindy LaFerle.

Read the Amazon desription:

Both a memoir and a handbook for living, Writing Home brings together 12 years of previously published essays and lifestyle columns by award-winning journalist Cindy La Ferle. A celebration of the domestic arts, Writing Home is for everyone who has ever attempted to combine work, parenthood, and homemaking. It is about reinventing family traditions, losing a parent, growing up, aging gracefully, discovering sense of place, and keeping the faith. Cindy La Ferle's award-winning personal essays and columns have appeared in The Christian Science Monitor, Reader's Digest, Country Gardens, Mary Engelbreit's Home Companion, The Detroit Free Press, The Cleveland Plain Dealer, The Royal Oak Daily Tribune, Unity Magazine, and many others.

It would make an excellent Christmas gift.

WRITERS' WORKSHOP

I'm conducting my first ever Writer's Workshop at Gilda's Club in Royal Oak on Jan. 23, 2008. I am really excited about it. More details coming...

"Some stories don't have a clear beginning, middle, and end. Life is about not knowing, having to change, taking the moment and making the best of it, without knowing what's going to happen next. Delicious ambiguity..." Gilda Radner

IT'S IN THE MAIL

I just dropped off the edited manuscript for Rock Star Mommy at the post office. I wanted to do it today, on Halloween, so I would have a reference to remember in years to come. I could say "I dropped off the final version on October 31."

When I initially decided to write a book, I always thought if I didn't sell it I would self-publish. When I opened the package containing all 190 pages of my manuscript and saw what it looked like, I was glad I didn't have to go that route. Every page was covered in red ink. I asked my editor about it and she said my MS had the"normal" amount of edits and she was really please with it.

The copy-editor did such a fantastic job with it. She found little inconsistencies that I never noticed and I've read it a hundred times.

So we are off to our annual neighborhood Halloween party at the Hartman's house. We are looking forward to the traditional dessert that looks like kitty litter and other frightening delicacies.

Happy Halloween!

MOMMYCAST

I spoke to the producer of MommyCast.com today. I am sending them an advanced copy of Rock Star Mommy.

The Mydols were the very first guests on this popular podcast show. That's a very cool feather in our cap.

We discussed the possibility of doing an event together in Washington DC. So far, if everything works out I'll be in St. Paul, Nashville, New York, Austin, Chicago, Cleveland, Los Angeles and DC next year. Whew!

I got my copy-edited version of Rock Star Mommy in the mail today. It's a hard copy with all sorts of notes in the margins etc. It's my LAST chance to look at it before it goes out to print. It's got to be back in New York by November 5.

Dylan has his first high school band concert tonight. He brought home a tux to wear. He's all grown up.

BOOKEXPO AMERICA!

My publisher indicated that they are thinking of sending me to BookExpo America in Los Angeles next June. My agent is thrilled and so am I. This is the big leagues!

What is BEA you ask? According to Wikipedia: BookExpo America is the largest annual book trade fair in the United States. BEA is almost always held in a major city over four days in May, often running in to early June. Nearly all significant book publishers in the United States, and many from abroad, have booths and exhibits at BEA, and use the fair as an opportunity to showcase upcoming titles, sell current books, socialize with colleagues from other publishing houses, and sell and buy subsidiary rights and international rights (although not on the scale of the rights negotiation that occurs at the Frankfurt Book Fair in October). Authors, librarians, and buyers for book retailers also attend the event.

EMBARRASSED? ME TOO!

The Mydols played at Gilda's Club tonight. Since our bass player moved to Seattle and our drummer was busy, Kara and I enlisted the help of three "real" Detroit music scene pros--two of them were guys!

We only practiced once and let me tell you it was a bit rough! But we had a ball.

There were lots of kids there and we tried to recruit a little girl sitting in the front row to come up and sing with us. Her mom was egging her on too and the girl said "You're embarrassing me!" Then, Johnny, our drummer said "I'm embarrassed too!" And then Mark, our bass player, said "We're all embarrassed!"

It was so true. And I think that is the difference between adults and kids. You learn that it doesn't kill you to try something new. Who cares if you are good or not? We laughed right through our mistakes and the audience had a ball. No one in the audience worried if we missed a note or not so why should we? Smile and the world smiles with you. And that is what Gilda's Club is all about. I LOVE Gilda's Club. The people there are such a joy to be around.

MY INNER ROCK STAR IS..

Madonna!

You may have been a material girl in the past, but these days you are cool, confident, and in control. Like your rock star counterpart, Madonna, you like to lead the way and get there first. And as soon as others start to follow in your footsteps you'll already be on to the next big thing. Even more inspirational is that underneath your groundbreaking spirit, you've got a big heart and thoughtful mind. You stand up for what you believe in and aren't afraid to ruffle some feathers along the way. That's vogue!

I just took a quiz at: http://web.tickle.com/tests/rockstar/

I FOUND MY BOOK LISTED ON-LINE TODAY

ARTIST IN RESIDENCE

At the ROMS Open House last Saturday, Dr. Thomas Moline (our district superintendent) referred to me at the re-dedication ceremony as Royal Oak's "Artist in Residence" for all the posters I have been cooking up for the high school and middle school. I was honored by such a title and then went home and made a poster for the Booster Club. Look for it around Royal Oak or visit www.ROHSBoosters.com.

ON THE COVER!

The kids and I made the cover of the Observer and Eccentric papers today. They even mentioned I have a memoir coming out in April.

Here's the story:

Article published Oct 21, 2007

Supermoms introduced on MichiganMoms.com

It isn't easy being a mom.

It takes a virtual village to raise a child, and that's what MichiganMoms.com is all about. The online community is a place where moms can go to get advice, support and perspective from other moms throughout metro Detroit and across the state.
Last month, the Observer & Eccentric put out a call for local mothers to step up as Supermoms and agree to post their expert advice to MichiganMoms.com on a regular basis. The response was overwhelming.

We got hundreds of phone calls and e-mails from potential Supermoms, all hungry for just the kind of community MichiganMoms.com provides.

It was difficult to choose, every applicant had unique talents and expertise all her own. In fact, there were so many great moms, we plan to rotate Supermoms throughout the year. For now, we settled on five Supermoms representing diverse cities and situations. They will start posting regularly today.

Here are the O&E Supermoms:

Judy Davids of Royal Oak is a working mom with two boys, ages 12 and 14. Davids is guitarist in the mom rock band The Mydols, plays in an over 40 soccer league and serves on the PTSA. Did we mention her memoir is being published in April? Look for her Web site posts on dealing with shy children, and decorating children's bedrooms.

Beth Hurley of Canton is raising two boys, ages 5 and 8. Technically a stay-at-home mom, the happily married Hurley is always busy volunteering at school, organizing mom-to-mom sales and serving on her homeowner's board. A self-proclaimed "news junkie" Hurley is the one friends call for recommendations on places to eat, shop or offer advice.

Sandi Martin of Plymouth is a working mom to four girls ranging from ages 2-10. Martin's sense of humor made her application rise to the top. Subjects she wants to tackle include "101 tasks we can accomplish while waiting for your daughter at dance class," and "Organization: Why is Polly Pocket in the freezer and Spider-Man on top of the ceiling fan?"

Kimberly Mortson of Westland is mom to two children, ages 5 and 8, and works for the City of Ann Arbor. Mortson hopes to blog about issues facing working moms, raising creative kids and traveling with children.

Julie Rogalski of Rochester Hills is a stay-at-home mom with a 2 and1/2-year-old. She is interested in fashion, exercise, sports and music, and hopes to discuss organic lifestyles, books, making the switch from working to stay-at-home-mom and early potty training.

If you'd like to learn more or chat with our Supermoms, log onto MichiganMoms.com and check out their posts. Or, start a thread of your own. You don't have to be a Supermom to join the online village at MichiganMoms.com.

The site is free and open to all super moms. We'll see you there!

TIRED BUT PROUD

In a few hours I'll be off to the high school to work at the Powder Puff football game. It looks like the girls are going to have a beautiful fall night.

I feel so exhausted right now, but I have accomplished so much this week.

a. I got all the soccer tee's, hoodies and sweats passed out to the high school players and got the minivan stickers done too.

b. I designed the Mydols soccer shirts and they just might be ready in time for our first games on Sunday.

c. I did a presentation at the PTSA on Monday.

d. I helped with Religious ED classes on Tuesday and came up with a pretty good idea for our End Global Warming campaign.

e. I went to the re-opening of Ball's Bridge and helped with registration and name tags.

f. I filled out my applications for the Observer & Eccentric blog job.

g. I finished a video for my parents 50th Anniversary.

g. AND I FINISHED MY MANUSCRIPT!!!!! It's now in copyediting where they do final fact-checking etc. (I guess that takes about a month.)

Am I tried? You bet. But I could not be prouder.

I also got to spend a little time with John's nephew Matt. He was in town visting from Minnesota.

I'M A SUPERMOM!

I applied for the title of Supermom and I got it! I have been selected to blog for MichiganMoms.com. (It pays too!) Get ready for me to start posting on Sunday, Oct. 21. The Observer & Eccentric Newspapers will run a story that day on all of the Supermoms selected. Look for a picure of me and my kids.

Woo! Woo!

CONGRATULATIONS MOM AND DADDY!

MYDDOLS SOCCER

Mydols soccer starts on October 21st! This year we are sponsoring 2 teams. We have a new logo for our hot pink uniforms with black with pink polka dot socks!
